Sept 14, 2007 - Over 500 guests celebrated the gala grand opening of the new Neiman Marcus location in Natick, with all proceeds of the event donated to local nonprofit organizations. TCAN was a proud recipient organization, along with the DeCordova Museum, the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care, and Don Henley's Walden Woods project. We recognize Neiman Marcus and all gala attendees for their support and generosity.

Apr 14, 2007 - TCAN and the Metrowest arts scene were featured in an the latest issue of Metrowest Magazine, a new periodical focused on community life in the Metrowest Boston suburbs. Penned by freelance writer Nancy M. Grossman, the article "Bring Arts to the Center: Metrowest's Thriving Arts Scene" spotlights TCAN, the Performing Arts Center for Metrowest and the Amazing Things arts center in Framingham, MA. Nov 20, 2006 - The Center for Arts in Natick celebrated its ninth year of community arts at TCAN Benefit 2006, a fundraising event held on November 18 featuring nationally-known comedian Paula Poundstone. After a two-hour tour de force performance by Paula, TCAN's large firedoors were opened to a covered tent revealing a champagne reception where guests enjoyed desserts provided by local restaurants while Paula Poundstone mingled with guests and signed copies of her new book "There's Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say."

Unveiled at the event, in TCAN's lobby, was a new donor recognition wall recognizing TCAN Capital Campaign contributors, members of TCAN's Leadership Circle program, and Founder's Circle donors. Designed by Ned Adams and constructed by Board member Craig Ross with technical assistance from Jay Ball, the donor wall frame borrows design elements from the Firehouse doors and provides fitting recognition for the generous donors who's support made Phase I of TCAN's construction possible. Plans for a second Capital Campaign are now underway, to complete the building's second floor.

Aug 7, 2006 - David Lavalley, TCAN's Executive Director, today announced the complete lineup of performances scheduled for the upcoming fall/winter season, including jazz, folk, rock and world music concerts, and the TCAN Players production of "Dancing at Lughnasa" directed by Rosann Santorelli. Concert artists will include Maia Sharp, Ellis Paul, Jesse Winchester, Marshall Crenshaw, Bellevue Cadillac, Lucy Kaplansky, Christine Lavin, Rebecca Parris, Grammy-award winner Mark Walker and the Berklee Brothers, 3 Swingin' Tenors, young jazz saxophone prodigy Grace Kelly, Northern Lights, Celtic artist Cathie Ryan, contemporary classical and New Age artist Robin Spielberg, rock from Buddahead and Fair, Yates & Betschart, Spookapella 4 featuring Duwende, Harmonytryx and Moosebutter, Canada's acclaimed acappella group Cadence, and the energetic Girl Authority. In addition to a full schedule of Open Mic programs including Rock Off Main Street and the Folk Open Mic series with weekly features, TCAN will introduce "SpeakEasy!" - a monthly spoken word event featuring comedy, improv, poetry and prose. Tickets for fall/winter season events are on sale now at TCAN's Box Office.

Aug 1, 2006 - Lauren Komack, Program Director of TCAN's Classical Music series, today announced the lineup of artists scheduled to perform for the 2006-07 season. Classical musicians and ensembles will include Ariel Wind Quintet, Intermezzo Opera, pianist Judith Gordon, the Oriana Consort, Paragon Brass Quintet, flamenco guitarist Juanito Pascual, the Lydian String Quartet, and acclaimed classical trio Triple Helix. Concert dates will appear in the fall season TCAN Program Guide, and on our website calendar.

June 19, 2006 - In a presentation to Natick's Board of Selectmen, TCAN Executive Director David Lavalley announced a list of complimentary services provided by TCAN to the Town of Natick during the previous year, with a commitment to continue providing support to local nonprofit organizations that benefit the local community. Among the services provided to the Town of Natick were partnerships with Natick's Morse Institute Library, the Natick Recreation Department, Kids Connect, Bacon Free Library, the Natick Historical Society, Natick Service Council and local public schools. In addition, TCAN has agreed to sponsor a free concert in Natick Common on July 14, 2006, and offered TCAN as a backup indoor location for the Natick Rec Department's popular children's summer concert series.

May 29, 2006 - The Natick Historical Commission presented its 2006 Preservation Award to The Center for Arts in Natick, in appreciation of TCAN's restoration of Natick's Central Fire Station originally constructed in 1875. The award was presented in an open meeting of Natick's Board of Selectman and broadcast on Natick Pegasus television. Stephen N. Evers, chairman of the Natick Historical Commission and lifelong Natick resident, presented a commemorative certificate to TCAN's Board chairman George Fiske, and Executive Director David Lavalley. Mr. Evers recognized TCAN's ongoing commitment to restore the Fire Station to it's original stature, including construction of the cupola by a workforce made up of TCAN volunteers in the community.

May 16, 2006 - At TCAN's Annual Meeting held at The Center for Arts in Natick, TCAN's 45-member Council of Electors unanimously voted to accept Kristine Van Amsterdam, Cathi Ianno Fournier, Elizabeth Hunnewell and Richard Maloney as the newest members of TCAN's Board of Directors. In opening remarks to the COE, President George Fiske thanked retiring Board members Milton Gilbert, Bob Courtemanche and David Ferrari for their years of volunteer service and support for TCAN. Executive Director David Lavalley presented highlights of TCAN's accomplishments in 2005 and his vision of the opportunities and challenges in TCAN's future, setting goals for fundraising programs, staffing levels, and arts alliances with public and private schools in the region. May 6, 2006 - The TCAN Players announce auditions for their fall production of the award-winning play "Dancing at Lughnasa" by Brian Friel, to be staged September 29 through October 8, 2006 at TCAN. Auditions will be held Sunday, June 25 and Tuesday June 27 - a cast list, play synopsis and other information can be found on the TCAN Players page of this website.

April 28, 2006 - TCAN and the Morse Institute Library of Natick are pleased to announce the winners of the TCAN/Morse Short Story Writing Awards for 2006. In proceedings held at TCAN last night and broadcast on Natick Pegasus television, these award-winning authors read their short stories to their audience, complemented by photographic projections selected to accompany each reading.

The seven writers– from Framingham, Natick, Somerville, Sharon, Dedham, and Mystic, Conn. – explore a range of subjects and styles. The seven entries were chosen by a panel of local judges from a field of 55 submissions from writers all over the Boston area and as far away as North Carolina. The winning stories are available in a single PDF file for download here. An anthology of the winning entries also will become part of the Morse Institute Library's collection.

The winners are:

" Lost Boy of Passadumkeag," by Stephanie Gayle of Somerville, tells the story of a woman's search for her brother in the deep woods of Maine and her coming to terms with the result.

" A Woman Like a Rock," by Thomas Griffin of Natick, explores the nature of a married couple's relationship after a husband makes an important discovery about his wife.

" Garnier's Journal," by Jeffrey Kiplinger of Mystic, Conn., takes readers into the mind of an expert mountain hiker who falls while climbing in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

" Fire Drill," by Evelyn Krieger of Sharon, tells the story of a woman's determination to keep her family safe, told from the point of view of her 8-year-old daughter.

" Road Kill," by Kim Poness of Framingham, describes a mother's efforts to connect with and comfort her troubled daughter during an adolescent crisis.

" Mink," by Katrin Schumann of Dedham, unfolds the story of a young German boy who sees his family experience wrenching changes near the end of World War II.

" Something to Hold on to," by Dawn Swann of Framingham, tells of a woman who, while traveling with her baby, finds herself needing to trust the grumpy businessman seated next to her.

February 7, 2006 - TCAN is seeking applications to its Council of Electors, from individuals interested in contributing their skills and knowledge to our vibrant community arts center. The 50-person TCAN Council of Electors is composed of people from diverse backgrounds — artists, musicians, volunteers, community leaders, audience members, and donors from all of the communities in the MetroWest geographic area. Responsibilities include engaging the MetroWest community with TCAN, providing input on the direction of the arts center, and electing new members to the TCAN's 15-member Board of Directors. There will be 5-seats elected to the Board each year. We welcome applications from local residents with an interest in the arts and a desire to serve their community. December 21, 2005 - The Center for Arts in Natick was notified of its acceptance to the online version of the Massachusetts Catalogue For Philanthropy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to matching the needs of nonprofit organizations with Massachusetts donors. The Catalogue, the first of its kind anywhere, was created in 1997 by a group of leading foundations to close the gap between Massachusetts' ranks in income and in charitable giving - then the largest such disparity in the nation. It has since become a showcase for Massachusetts philanthropy, and a one-stop shop for a family's charitable giving. The Center for Arts in Natick was chosen in a rigorous competition by professional grantmakers. TCAN's application was noted for its exceptional entrepreneurship, and evident representation of the best in Massachusetts philanthropy. TCAN's online listing will be posted soon, and its formal application will now be considered for inclusion in the print version of the Catalogue For Philanthropy, scheduled for 2006.

November 4, 2005 - The Center for Arts in Natick held its most successful benefit fundraiser to date with a special theater event featuring The Second City comedy troupe from Chicago. A group of 200 attendees enjoyed an evening of comedy sketches from young comic actors from the troupe, following in the footsteps of Second City alumni Gilda Radner, Alan Alda, Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi. Sponsors of TCAN's Benefit 2005 included the Middlesex Savings Bank, Citizen's Bank, Eastern Bank, Natick Federal Savings Bank, TD Banknorth, the Natick Mall, John Catlin & Associates and Comcast, an Anonymous donor as well as many individual sponsors. Proceeds of the event exceeded $57,000 and will help support TCAN's ongoing operations and programming.

October 27, 2005 - The Center for Arts in Natick received an award for the restoration and reuse of the Summer Street building that formerly served as Natick's central firehouse. TCAN restored the building in 2003 to become the site of a regional arts venue and was recognized by the Massachusetts Historical Commission at an awards ceremony on Oct. 20. Highlights of the firehouse restoration included reconstruction of the original hose-drying tower, replacement of the historic cupola, restoration of windows and masonry, a new roof, and the return of the modified two double-bay entrances to the original four arched bays, complete with opening wood doors. The cost of the project was about $2.2 million, which was funded by contributions raised through TCAN's capital campaign.

April 7, 2005 - The Center for Arts in Natick hosted the first of, what we hope to be, many short story contests. We are proud to present the winning stories in PDF format for any who would like to read them. We want to thank Lew McCreary, Camille Napier, Karol Bartlett and Martha Heller for providing the invaluable service of judging the many contributions. We extend special thanks to Michael Goldberg for bring this project to life as well as acting as both judge and coordinator. And last but not least, we want to thank all those who submitted stories and provided the judges with an embarrassment of riches from which to choose.

November 16, 2004 - Natick's historic Firehouse constructed in 1875, the home of The Center for Arts in Natick, received a crowning touch today with the installation of a restored cupola to the Firehouse bell tower. The cupola was built in Wellesley by a group of TCAN volunteers, led by Natick Selectman Jay Ball and Master Carpenter Ken Soderholm. November 15, 2004 - UNICCO® Service Company and The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) today jointly announced that UNICCO is providing in-kind services valued at over $10,000 per year to the non-profit organization. UNICCO, one of North America's largest integrated facilities services companies, has “adopted” TCAN and is deploying its staff to provide weekly janitorial services. November 10, 2004 - The Sudbury Foundation, a private philanthropy supporting public and non-profit institutions in the Metrowest community, has provided $25,000 to The Center for Arts in Natick funding a major upgrade of computer systems and software used for ticketing, donor tracking, volunteer administration, website development and office applications. November 1, 2004 - The Morse Institute Library and TCAN jointly announce a Short Story Writing Contest, open to the public, to highlight the talents of area fiction writers.
