a photography exhibit by Nancy Rich

Nancy Rich highlights traditional New England rowboats that are used for both pleasure – a leisurely day on the water – and for work – by lobstermen and women to ferry them to and from their larger craft moored offshore.  Other images portray elegant north Atlantic “sea sculptures” and the whimsy of objects floating in liquid or frozen in ice.

Nancy Rich has an innate ability to see the beauty in simple objects and the skill to capture that beauty in a photograph that both attracts the eye and stimulates the imagination. She is best known for her “Nor’eastern Dinghies” collection of photographs that highlights the wooden rowboats along the north Atlantic coastlines of New England and the Canadian Maritimes. Her unique images of these small boats were recognized by the publisher Sheridan House in a one-of-a-kind book titled, Afloat on the Tide. It serves as a historical record of these boats now elusive with the pervasive use of synthetic, more durable materials. Two of Nancy’s collections, “Sea Sculptures” and “Glass, Liquid, and Ice Capades” feature macro images of objects, including elegant fragments of seashells, dried seaweeds resembling Tiffany glass, and colorful marbles and sparkling gems floating through dense liquids or suspended in ice.

Over the past 15 years, Nancy has exhibited her photographs in New England and the Midwest, and she has given book talks at area libraries, bookstores, and schools. She is a member of The Clever Hand Gallery, an artists’ cooperative located in Wellesley, MA (, and the New England Light Painters photography group (
