Photographic Memory
Featuring the Paintings of Donna Savastio and Ruth Scotch

Exhibition Dates: May 2-27, 2001
Reception: Sunday, May 6, 1 to 3 PM

"Photographic Memory" is the title of the exhibit in the TCAN Gallery from May 6th through May 30th featuring the paintings of Donna Savastio and Ruth Scotch. The exhibition was organized as an exploration into the varying ways that artists use photographs in their creative process, and the different results that are produced.

Donna Savastio's paintings, which utilize nature as subject, are produced from methodical approaches to painting and drawing, as well as from black and white photos that she shoots in the field. She describes her use of photographs as "note cards" and as reminders; drawings are made as well, guided by her emotional response to the landscape.

Ruth Scotch's paintings of outdoor markets and cafes evolved out of her desire to paint colorful, visually complex scenes full of varying shapes and patterns, organized and simplified using contrasts of bright light and shadow. She photographs environments that provide her with these visual elements. She describes working from a photograph as "a mystery that reveals itself; I concentrate on painting the spaces between objects rather than on the objects themselves. In this way, the objects reveal themselves to me. Soon I am creating the kind of spatial depth I seek in my work".

Everyone is welcome to the reception for the artists on Sunday, May 6, 2001 from 1:00 to 3:00 in the TCAN Gallery. Gallery hours and directions are available by calling 508-647-0097, or at www.natickarts.org. Please contact Cheryl Litster at 508-647-0097 or at cheryll@natickarts.org.
