Expanding Horizons
Photography by Rita Gurevich and Kevin Salemme
Show runs May 16-June 24 Reception May 28, 12:00-1:30 p.m..

Photography serves as the vehicle for presenting unique artistic vision, rather than as a tool for objectively recording "reality", in the first exhibition in the Gallery at The Center for Arts in Natick mounted under the direction of TCANšs new Gallery Director, Steve Gildea.

Slightly different approaches are taken by the two artists included in Expanding Horizons: Photography by Rita Gurevich and Kevin Salemme.  When Rita Gurevich sees an essence of beauty in a scene; whether a still life, natural setting, or historical architecture; she photographs it, then subtly manipulates the image by computer in order to heighten and intensify this experience of beauty, so it can be shared.  The resulting art works are transcendent, powerful, and still. The photographs Kevin Salemme has selected for this exhibition are shot in three consecutive frames.  He prints these frames in black and white as a triptych on watercolor paper, then hand colors them with dyes and watercolors.  The results are entrancing.  The images seem to capture dreamlike moments, fleeting impressions, glimpses of ideas.  The effect is intentional.  As Salemme states, he wants "to avoid any contextual or intended meaning.  The viewers are invited to enter these spaces and find their own meaning."

A reception with the artists will be held Sunday, May 28th, from noon until 1:30 p.m. in the gallery of The Center for Arts in Natick, 31 Main Street, Natick.  The show will run through June 24th.  The TCAN gallery is normally open from 1:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.  Admission is free.  Please call to double-check these hours, as the gallery is staffed with volunteers.  The art can also be viewed during musical and spoken word performances at the Center, evenings Tuesday through Sunday.  Ticket prices for these events vary.  For more information about TCAN events, call 508.647.0097 or visit the centeršs Web site, www.natickarts.org
