WHS X 12 introduces
TCANıs six week series of gallery exhibitions featuring artwork by area
high school students. TCAN Visual Arts Education Chairperson Dawn Randall
taught art in the public schools for twenty-one years. Motivated to coordinate
this series because in general the community is not aware of the exciting
work being done in the schools, Dawn also wanted to recognize young people
for their creative talents. "Sometimes they lack confidence,"
Dawn remarked. "They don't often receive the kind of recognition
they deserve. Their viewpoint is wonderfully refreshing and new."
The broad range of
artwork in WHS X 12 represents samples drawn from bodies of work created
by twelve art majors participating in Walnut Hill School's Senior Critique
Class. Working entirely outside the confines of class assignments, these
students are learning to create art work that is solely a representation
of their own ideas and self-generated goals. According to Walnut Hill
School Art Department Chairman Jim Woodside, "This presents an exciting
opportunity and is an awesome challenge for a young art student."
The names of the students
(and the state or country theyıre from) are as
follows: Arlen Austin (Maine); Samantha Bodkin (Massachusetts); Anya
Guzauski (New York); Jacquelyn Johnston (Tennessee); Rika Kawato (Japan);
Jee Seon Kim (South Korea); Rami Kim (South Korea); Chelsea Lawrence (Massachusetts);
Lisa Mordkovich (Massachusetts); Ben Putnam (Connecticut); Robin Schavoir
(Massachusetts); Gatis Zarins (Latvia).
