Grace
At The Center for Arts in Natick
Show runs Nov 9Dec 5, Reception Nov 20th 5:307:30 p.m.
Curated by Michael Dowling of the Danforth Museum, Grace presents the painting and photography of artists Melissa Weiss Ostrow, Mary Begin, and Emily Heywood. The exhibition runs from November 9th through December 5th.
Ostrow, Begin, and Heywood all have studied with Dowling, well know for his recent Danforth installation, Freshwater. “Michael Dowling taught me how to be Emily Heywood, artist.” Ostrow and Begin also acknowledge Dowling’s significant influence on their artistic lives and visions.
The paintings and photographs selected for Grace draw the viewer into places within the boundary between real and imagined. Ostrowąs slightly grainy black and white photographs transform architectural space into ambiguous geometry, and swimming boys into impressionistic patterns. Begin and Heywood both paint large atmospheric canvases with luminescent color. A serene light diffuses through Begin’s cathedral arches, tent, and seascapes. Heywood’s mysterious paintings of inner realms unfold, coalesce, and reveal as they are viewed.
A reception with the artists, including a gallery talk by Michael Dowling, will be held Saturday, November 20th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the gallery of The Center for Arts in Natick, 31 Main Street, Natick. The show will run through December 5th.
