Trees have been the
subject of all forms of art and myth throughout history. In New England,
October is a prime month to admire the beauty of our local trees. With
all this in mind, we asked the artists in this region to submit original
art on the subject.
Roots hold the soil,
keeping it from eroding. Shade from trees keeps us cool in summer. Trees
absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into our environment. They diffuse
strong winds and release moisture that becomes the rain. Trees provide
shelter for birds, humans and other animals. Their wood becomes fuel and
material to build our homes, our furnishings, the paper we write on, the
books we read. Trees produce food in seed and fruit. They connect the
ground with the sky in a grand variety of beautiful forms and colors.
Their leaves become a blanket in winter, keeping their roots warm and
protected.
Exhibitions Committee
was so pleased with the large response to this call to artists, that they
worked together to include as many artists and pieces as they could hang.
It makes this a very full gallery, with 44 artists showing one work each.
We hope new relationships take root from the seeds of this exhibit!
Each work is as varied
as the trees themselves, each artist and each tree, an individual expression.
Art, as nature, focuses our souls, helps us pause to reflect and perhaps
stimulates us to ponder our relationships with our human community and
our environment.
