"Abstract Reflections" on view
at The Center for Arts in Natick
Show runs June 2-30
Painters Beth Ladd and Helena Wirth will exhibit their bold, energetic, mixed media work in ``Abstract Reflections’’ at The Center for Arts in Natick beginning June 2.
The Sherborn artists employ reflective materials to explore the many facets of human perception. Ladd uses mirror shards and rock crystals to bring light to and enhance the texture of her three-dimensional work, which invites viewers to consider different ways of seeing the same object. Wirth uses mirrors, metallic paints, glitter and reflectors to evoke shifting emotions from a single painting.
Wirth’s paintings change according to the angle at which viewers see them. ``What doesn’t change?’’ she said. ``It’s how we look at everything.’’
Ladd’s work, a series of images inspired by an ocean plant called sea grapes, demonstrate how objects can exist at different scales, from the microscopic to the planetary, simultaneously. ``Nature has always been a starting point,’’ according to Ladd, but ``I wanted to think about the composition, the texture, the medium. The concept of layers really appeals to me.’’
Ladd has shown her work throughout the Boston area, including the Fuller Museum of Art in Brockton, as well as in New York. Wirth has exhibited her paintings in Massachusetts and in Maine.
A reception for the artists will be held at the Center on Friday, June 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Center for Arts in Natick, 31 Main St., Natick. The show will run through June 30. In the past year, TCAN has shown the work of more than 80 area artists in 13 gallery shows.
The gallery is normally open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. Please call to double-check these hours, as the gallery is staffed by volunteers. The art can also be viewed during musical and spoken word performances at the Center, evenings Tuesday through Sunday. Ticket prices for these events vary.
