Unearthing Gaia
Kathleen and I met at the Art for Aids Show in Worcester four years ago.
She was admiring a photograph of mine and I happened to be standing nearby.
This was the beginning of a rich friendship. We have shared many experiences:
critique groups, technological information, exhibitions, and field trips
to galleries and museums. Therefore we decided to exhibit together.
Kathleen works with the experimental
properties of monoprinting. Textures and images metamorphose into a singular
piece. She searches for relationships between homosapiens and other species,
whether visual or actual, similar or diverse. The work evokes narrative,
therefore viewers are left to create their own stories.
I combine two nineteenth century
photographic processes to explore core female values in the context of
the spiritual and natural world. I utilize ancient artifacts in which
the most prevalent form is the female figure, representing birth and death,
rebirth, and transformation. These archetypal symbols tap into powerful
unconscious forces and thus offer the possibility of internalizing the
values symbolized. I invite viewers to explore the relevance of these
images today.
